North East Sustainable Resources Board
There are big business opportunities in the North East to make much better use of the huge volumes of waste we throw away. Proposals for a ‘waste board’ have now been finalised – a broad consortium of public and private organisations have now jointly committed themselves to work together to take hold of these opportunities by setting up the North East Sustainable Resources Board.
Wardell Armstrong – Plastics Recycling and Reprocessing Study
RENEW commissioned a study to look at the plastics recycling and reprocessing sectors in the North East of England in 2009. The aim of this work was to map the sector as regards the quantities and types of waste plastics being generated and reprocessing activity in the North East. Wardell Armstrong LLP were appointed by RENEW to carry out the study.
ARUP – North East Waste Mapping
This project aimed to provide greater confidence to waste infrastructure companies interesting investing in the region and improve the accessibility and usefulness of available waste management information.
Arup were commissioned by RENEW to undertake this work and a report was prepared as a companion to the Waste Mapping Tool developed during this project.
N Sign
N Sign Ltd is a rapidly expanding signage and engraving company based in Stockton, Teesside. They have developed and are able to offer a wide range of different signage and engraving solutions.
RENEW were approached by N-Sign in 2008, for assistance to enable the company to move ahead with plans for a new product.
North East Recycling Ltd
RENEW have supported North East Recycling via the joint funding of a feasibility study to support the development of the business into new areas. The project was prompted by NER’s ambition to develop its business in line with some important changes, not least the move in 2009 to larger premises in Blaydon form their original premises in Newburn in the west-end of Newcastle.
Point of Sport
David Mallon had the idea to design and build a portable dug out or sports shelter for his son’s football club. A number of versions were considered before arriving at the basic design – the suitability of various materials was also considered, including the use of recycled plastics.
RENEW supported the project in 2008 with marketing costs and testing/product development costs. It also creates a market for recycled plastics and may help other designers of recycled products to realise their potential.
Valpak – Battery Recycling Study
This project aims to identify the feasibility, market opportunities and business case for introducing a battery recycling plant in the North East of England.
